Latest on WISeR: CMS Delays Implementation of Two Service Lines in Prior Auth Model

The agency indicates more time is needed “for operational readiness.”

On April 3, CMS announced a delay in implementing two services from the Wasteful and Inappropriate Services Reduction (WISeR) model.

  • Deep Brain Stimulation for Essential Tremor and Parkinson’s Disease (NCD 160.24).

  • Percutaneous Image-Guided Lumbar Decompression for Spinal Stenosis (NCD 150.13) (HCPCS 02756T, G0276).

In its announcement, CMS did not mention the recent lawsuit, concerns from members of Congress, or the negative press the model has received. It explained that the delay was due to operational readiness. The services could be added back on in the future.
