Utah Medical Board: Suspend AI-Prescription Renewal Program

The State of Utah Medical Licensing Board (Board) issued a letter to the Utah Department of Commerce recommending the suspension of Doctronic, an AI-powered program that enables prescription renewals without direct physician contact. In response, the State issued its own letter stating that the program would continue and welcoming input from the Board. Utah used its regulatory sandbox to waive state requirements, allowing the implementation of this model.

The program was launched in January 2026 by Utah’s Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy. Under the agreement, the Doctronic chatbot will conduct clinical evaluations and renew prescriptions for nearly 200 drugs. This model highlights unresolved issues in regulating AI in healthcare. Since its announcement, concerns about the lack of human physician involvement have raised questions about safety, governance, and liability. Notably, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not weighed in on this technology.

The Board states in their letter that they were not consulted before implementation and that, as a result, their oversight role over medical practitioners in the state was circumvented. “While we support the legislative mandate to explore AI implementation, we also have a stewardship to protect Utah citizens. Collectively, the board has decades of medical experience across a variety of specialties, positioning us to understand the potential consequences of implementing what may seem like an innocuous task of AI-driven prescription refills. Overseeing prescription refills is a task reserved for properly licensed medical practitioners for critical safety and clinical reasons.” The letter also notes their concern that financial motives have influenced the decision-making process.

Doctronic does not seem to be going anywhere; if anything, an expanded footprint seems likely in the near future. Last month, they announced they had raised $40 million in their third funding round, bringing the total to $65 million. This funding will allow it to expand its operations. It currently operates its own clinical practice, which is licensed in all 50 states.
