Doctronic Releases Initial Data from Utah Pilot

Initial data suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) could help support prescription renewals.

Launched in January 2026 in Utah, Doctronic is an AI health platform that allows patients to legally renew routine, non-controlled medication prescriptions entirely online, without direct involvement from a human doctor. Currently, the pilot is in an early phase, and Doctronic physicians are reviewing all interactions. The company has released data for January to April 2026, based on reviews conducted by Doctronic-employed physicians. The company has said it will conduct a separate, independent review as well.

Overall Approval Rates

  • In 72% of cases, Doctronic recommended renewing the prescription, which then went to a human physician for review.

  • The other 28% of users had their cases escalated to a physician due to case characteristics (e.g., the patient needing new lab work or presenting complications).

In the 72% of Cases Where the AI Recommended Renewal

  • In 91% of cases, the reviewing physician agreed that a renewal was appropriate based on the AI’s gathered information.

In the 28% of Cases Where the AI Escalated to a Physician Without Recommending Renewal

  • When the AI declined to recommend renewal without further information, a human telehealth appointment was arranged.

While this initial data seems promising, stakeholders will still seek independent evidence demonstrating that the Doctronic model is safe and effective. Even with more definitive data, some states are exploring legislation that would prohibit independent medical decision-making from AI-enabled technology without human oversight.
